The hotel connectivity bar has moved — fast. A decade ago, free Wi-Fi was a differentiator. Today it's table stakes, and guests are judging properties on factors most GMs never think about: latency during video calls, dead zones in corner suites, and whether the network chokes when the conference room fills up.

The Guest Connectivity Checklist

Walk through your property as a guest in 2026. Here's what they notice:

Instant, frictionless login. Nobody wants to hunt for a password card, type a 16-character code, or click through a captive portal that loads in 8 seconds. Properties using WPA3-Enterprise with device-based authentication (or simple QR-code onboarding) are winning the first impression.

Bandwidth that survives the evening rush. When 80% of your rooms stream 4K content simultaneously — Netflix, YouTube TV, Zoom calls — your pipe needs to handle it. The math isn't complicated: 25 Mbps per room × number of rooms = your minimum. Most mid-tier properties are still running on circuits designed for 2018 traffic patterns.

No dead zones. The corner room on the 4th floor with two bars of signal? That's the review that starts with "Beautiful property, but..." and ends with a 3-star rating. Modern mesh Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 deployments solve this, but they require a proper site survey — not just mounting APs where the cable was easy to run.
