- Security systems → IP or cellular. Modern panels support both. Cellular gives you path diversity.
- Branch office data → SD-WAN over broadband or fixed wireless. More bandwidth, less money, built-in failover.
4. Don't Skip the Backup Path
If you're replacing a T1 with a single broadband connection, you've traded one point of failure for another. Always pair primary connectivity with a wireless failover — LTE or 5G — that kicks in automatically when the primary drops.
The failover shouldn't cost more than $50-75/month per location. If someone quotes you triple digits, they're quoting enterprise pricing for something that should be commodity.
The Timeline
A clean T1 migration typically takes 60-90 days for a single site, longer if you're doing multi-site coordination. The biggest variable isn't the technology — it's carrier lead times for new circuits.
If you have a disconnection notice with a 30-day deadline, you need an interim solution. Fixed wireless or cellular-based connectivity can be deployed in days, not weeks. It buys you time to land the permanent replacement without your business going dark.

A typical T1 costs $300-800 per month. A broadband connection with SIP trunks and wireless failover usually comes in under $200/month — and gives you 10-50x the bandwidth.
The transition costs (equipment, installation, configuration) typically pay for themselves within 6-12 months from circuit savings alone.
Don't Wait for the Notice
The carriers aren't going to call you six months in advance and ask nicely. When the disconnection letter arrives, you'll be scrambling.
