The End of T1 Lines: Migration Strategies That Actually Work

T1 lines held business communications together for three decades. And now they're disappearing — fast.
Carriers are sending disconnection notices with 30 to 90-day windows. If you're running on T1s today, you don't have the luxury of a two-year transition plan. You need a migration strategy that works now.
Here's what actually works — and what doesn't.
The Landscape Right Now
AT&T, Verizon, Lumen, and every major carrier are actively decommissioning T1 infrastructure. Copper pairs that once carried 1.544 Mbps are being pulled or simply abandoned. Maintenance costs have skyrocketed. Replacement parts are on backorder.
The carriers don't want this business anymore. They're making it expensive and inconvenient on purpose.
The good news? The alternatives are better, cheaper, and easier to manage than what you're running today. The bad news? You have to pick the right one for your situation, or you'll trade one headache for another.
Strategy 1: Fiber + Wireless Backup
If fiber is available at your location, this is the gold standard. A fiber primary connection with wireless LTE or 5G backup gives you everything a bonded T1 setup provided — plus 10x to 1000x the bandwidth at a lower monthly cost.
What to watch for: Not every location has fiber. And even when it's "available," the buildout can take 60-120 days. Start the process before the disconnection notice arrives.
We typically spec a 100 Mbps or 200 Mbps fiber circuit for most business locations, with a fixed wireless or cellular backup that kicks in automatically. Total cost: usually 30-50% less than the equivalent bonded T1 setup. The math gets better from there.
Strategy 2: Fixed Wireless as Primary
For locations where fiber isn't available (or won't be for months), fixed wireless has become remarkably reliable. Modern fixed wireless isn't the point-to-point microwave of 2010. It's carrier-grade, low-latency, weather-hardened, and can deliver 50-500 Mbps consistently.
We've deployed fixed wireless for dozens of multi-site customers who couldn't wait for fiber buildouts. The key is pairing it with cellular failover and monitoring everything in real time.
Pricing is competitive with fiber in most markets. The real win is speed of deployment: we can usually have a site up in 5-10 business days versus months for fiber.
Strategy 3: Cellular-First with Dual Carrier
In some cases — particularly for backup lines, temporary sites, or locations with excellent cellular coverage — dual-carrier LTE/5G routers are the right call. You get two different carrier SIMs in one device. If one network goes down, the other takes over automatically.
This approach replaced dedicated POTS lines for fire alarm and elevator communications in multiple buildings we manage. It's FCC-compliant, NFPA-compliant, and costs a fraction of what the T1 replacement quotes came in at.
Not every location is a good fit. Run a site survey first. Cellular signal strength matters.
The Migration Playbook
Here's the process we follow for every T1 migration:
Week 1: Site survey. What's connected to the T1? Voice, data, alarms, elevators, POS, security? Map it all. You'd be surprised how many businesses discover circuits they're paying for that nobody uses anymore.
Week 2-3: Vendor selection. Run a competitive process. Fiber providers, fixed wireless operators, managed SD-WAN vendors. Get at least three quotes per site. The pricing spread on T1 replacement is wider than you'd think.
Week 4-6: Circuit installation and parallel testing. Run the new connection alongside the T1. Test everything. Voice quality, data speeds, failover behavior, alarm panel communication. Don't cut the T1 until you've verified every endpoint.
Week 6-8: Cutover and T1 cancellation. Schedule this carefully, especially if the T1 carries voice traffic. We do cutovers on Friday evenings to give ourselves the weekend if something goes sideways. It rarely does.
What Not to Do
Don't wait for the carrier to force your hand. By the time the disconnection notice arrives, your options narrow significantly. Start planning now, even if your T1 is still working.
Don't assume you need the same thing you had. A 4-line bonded T1 setup delivering 6 Mbps doesn't mean you need a 6 Mbps replacement. You probably need 100 Mbps or more, and it'll cost less.
Don't do this alone. Telecom migration is a specialized skill. One wrong move — losing 911 capability on an elevator phone, or breaking fire alarm monitoring — is a compliance violation and a safety issue. Work with people who've done this before.
The Bottom Line
T1 migration isn't optional anymore. The carriers are making the decision for you. But it doesn't have to be painful. With the right strategy, you'll end up with better connectivity, lower costs, and fewer headaches than you had with the T1.
